New Genoa Breakwater
The breakwater, which protects the port from waves and storm surges, will be demolished and moved 450 metres offshore to allow much larger ships, up to 400 metres long, to pass through. The new breakwater will increase the port’s reception capacity, bringing economic benefits to the city and the country. The structure of this breakwater is mammoth: it consists of 100 reinforced concrete caissons installed with a submersible platform. The largest are as tall as a 10-storey building, over 33 metres.
