Italy’s largest caissons for the Port of Salerno

The first 2 of the 4 cellular mega-caissons that will form the extension of the outer breakwater of the commercial port of Salerno – Autorità di Sistema Portuale del Mar Tirreno Centrale – have been launched. The operation was managed by the technicians from the contracting companies GS EDIL and ACMAR.

The functional adaptation works at the port entrance include the extension of the existing outer breakwater by 200 metres and the shortening of the inner breakwater by 100 metres.

The works have become a “case study” for the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Naples. The cellular reinforced concrete caissons have a plan area of 39 x 22.5 metres and a total height of 12.5 metres, transported afloat using the “climbing formwork” technique.

F&M Ingegneria, together with HS Marine, oversaw the executive design.
